
Ambassador Gianpaolo Scarante

Born in Venice on the 15th of July 1950. He graduates in Political Sciences with full marks and honours from the University of Padua, where he also works as Assistant Lecturer of International Law. In 1975 he takes the diploma in High International Studies at the John Hopkins University of Bologna.

After entering the diplomatic career, he is posted in Tirana (Albania) and then in Dortmund (Germany) as Consul. In 1986 he is in Rome as Deputy Head of U.A.S. (Special Affairs Unity for counterterrorism).

Assigned in Tunis (Tunisia) as Head of the Economic-Commercial Office, and then in Rabat (Morocco) as First Counsellor. In 1998 he returns to the Ministry in Rome, where he leads both the 3rd and the 4th Department of the General Direction for European Countries, handling multilateral cooperation as well as political and economic affairs for Central-eastern Europe.

In October 2001 he is Head of the Secretariat of Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs. He is afterwards appointed Head of Cabinet of the Minister for Foreign Affairs. Minister Plenipotentiary since January 2002. In November 2002 he is Deputy Diplomatic Advisor of the Italian Prime Minister. In November 2004 he is also appointed Special Representative of the Italian Prime Minister for the Balkans.

In September 2005 he becomes Diplomatic Advisor of the Italian Prime Minister.

Since September 2006 he is Ambassador of Italy to the Hellenic Republic.
- Mr. Scarante is married and has two sons.
- He has been appointed “Grande Ufficiale al merito della Repubblica Italiana”.
- Served in the Corps of “Lagunari Serenissima” (Navy).
- He holds a civil pilot’s licence of second degree.
