18/06/2007 -

Four new emergency projects to assist the families displaced from Nahr El Bared refugee camp to Beddawi refugee camp have been launched today by the Italian Embassy in Beirut through the Emergency Programme (ROSS Programme) of the Italian Cooperation. The total financing amount to 220.828 Euros. All projects have been endorsed by UNRWA and are coordinated with the relevant national institutions.

The first one (161.460 Euro), implemented by the Italian NGO ARCS, with Renee Maowad Foundation, will provide hot meals and breakfast packets for 960 displaced persons in two schools in Beddawi for 3 weeks. Moreover, 200 clothing kits will be provided, for a total of 1200 beneficiaries, and recreational activities for the young will be organized in the school.

The project of Italian NGO Un Ponte Per…, in collaboration with Beit Aftal Al-Sumud, aims to improve the hygienic and sanitary conditions of the displaced families, selecting 130 young displaced Palestinians who will carry out daily cleaning activities in public places, dormitories and schools. Through these activities, the volunteers will be provided with a source of income for their families. Hygiene and health education sessions through games will be also be carried out. It has a total financing of 34.509 Euro.

Un Ponte Per… will also provide, with his partner Al-Jana, educational and cultural activities among the youth of Beddawi camp, where overcrowding and traumatic events of the past weeks dramatically increase the chances of stress-related disorders. The project will create “spaces” where young people may set their imagination through gatherings, games and projections of educational films.  It has a total financing of 10.115 Euro.

The project of the Italian NGO Ricerca e Cooperazione aims at ensuring continued access to psychiatric care both for the displaced of Nahr al-Bared camp and the residents of Beddawi camp. It will provide the Family Guidance Center with a new psychiatrist and new mental health medicines. The intervention will guarantee the availability of psychiatric care for treating patients suffering mental pathologies.  It has a total financing of 14.744 Euro.

The Italian Government, through the ROSS Programme, is already financing a 50.000 Euro first emergency aid project implemented by the Italian NGO “Terre des Hommes - Italy” in collaboration with its local partner NABAA and in coordination with UNRWA, aimed at addressing the basic and urgent needs of 450 displaced women and 1350 children from the camp of Nahr el Bared now housed in the Beddawi camp and providing clothing and recreational activities.
