Lebanon is a key country in the Middle East and Italy is one of its principal partners, at both the political level and in economic and commercial terms. The recent conflict that struck Lebanon such a harsh blow saw our country engaged from the outset in efforts to bring an end to the hostilities by organising, inter alia, an International Conference in Rome on 26 July 2006, an event which paved the way for the ceasefire and the start of the reconstruction process. After this unprecedented assumption of responsibility, Italy went on to lead the international effort to achieve stabilisation in Lebanon by providing an immediate response to the requirements of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. Our country was quick to place a large military contingent at the United Nations’ disposal, in numerical terms the biggest of the contributing countries’ forces. Since 2 February 2007, the Italian Major-General Claudio Graziano has been Force Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Italy’s commitment within the UNIFIL framework should be viewed in conjunction with its substantial contribution to the post-conflict reconstruction, which also included a complex operation to clean up the oil-spill in the sea off the electricity power station at Jieh, which was hit during the military operations.
