The ICT sector is a rather young but very dynamic and of course high tech sector of industry. It is considered to be the catalyst of the 'network economy' for which it provides the necessary infrastructure. Citizens, entrepreneurs and civil servants increasingly realise that ICT can make processes more efficient and faster. Internet business and administrative simplification are no longer hollow concepts. The (broadband) internet is moving up in everyday life: online banking, downloading sound and images, communicating interactively, telematic and logistic applications etc. News opportunities arise in the field of health care, education and training, work organisation and leisure. The growing complementarity between fixed and wireless communication (cf. wireless LAN and UMTS) and the integration of IT systems open many possibilities for innovation. The Belgian ICT sector accounted for a turnover of 30 billion euro in 2002 and created added value worth around 11 billion euro. Most of the added value was generated by commercial activities, IT and telecom services. The subsector development and manufacturing of ICT products accounts for about 10 %.
