CULTURAL COOPERATION 

The bilateral cultural cooperation is regulated by the Cultural Agreement signed in Rome on 8 January 1975 and by executive programms valide for three years (the complete English text of the Agreement is available in the website of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade:www.austlii.edu.au/au/other/dfat/treaties/1975/20).
The 1975 Agreement encourages the cultural actvities between the two countries in in the fields of literature, music, crafts, cinema and theatre; the diffusion of books, publications and radio and television programs; the youth exchanges, also in sports; the cooperation between universities, cultural and scientific institutions.
On cinema, the two countries signed an agreement for joint cinematographic co-production on 28 June 1993. Thanks to the Agreement, there are now two Italian Institutes of Culture, one in Melbourne (www.iicmelbourne.esteri.it), the other in Sydney (www.iicsydney.esteri.it); they organise Italian language classes, cultural events, alone or in cooperation with Australian institutions, in all Australian capital cities.
The Italian government sends every year ten teachers from the public school sector to teach Italian in the main Australian universities. The Italian language is also supported by contribution provided by the Italian government to several entities organising courses in the public and private school system and for Italian migrants and their families.
For this purpose a number of agreements with the State governments have been signed in the last years. Every year the Italian government offers scholarships for a total of 100 months (between 700 and 770 euro each month) to study in Italy.
Around half of these are reserved for Italian citizens permanently resident in Australia. Instructions are issued in Italian only between February and March each year, published in the websites of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Italian Embassy in Canberra and the Italian Institutes of Culture in Melbourne and Sydney.
Selections are held in Canberra before the end of May.
