INFORMATION FOR ITALIAN CITIZENS RESIDING IN DENMARK

09/06/2008 - From October 26th 2006 onwards, Italian Consulates abroad and Police Authorities in Italy will be issuing a new, electronic passport model based on modern technology which offers a higher level of security.

The electronic passport contains specific anticounterfeit features and a microprocessor which allows for the storage of electronically verified data on the holder of the document and the issuing Authority.

Due to the sophisticated technology, the price of the new passport has been fixed by ministerial decree (Ministry of Economic Affairs) at 44,66 euro for the booklet with 32 pages and 45,62 euro for the version with 48 pages. The annual stamp tax will remain the same and shall not be imposed on citizens requesting a passport which exclusively enables them to circulate inside the European Union.

The issue of the new travel document, which is a joint EU initiative, will enable the member states to continue to benefit from the “Visa Waiver Program” which authorizes the entry intro the Unites States or transit through U.S. airports without a visa. In fact, from October 26th, travellers wishing to enter or transit through the Unites States without a visa, are required to have an electronic passport, a passport with a digital photograph issued by the Italian police authorities before October 26th 2006 (the Consulates never issued this kind of passport), or an optically readable passport issued or renewed before October 26th 2005. Please note that minor children in order to benefit from the “Visa Waiver Program” are required to have their own passport, as the registration in the passport of one of the parents is no longer sufficient.
