Political Cooperation
The relationship between Italy and Denmark is characterized by an intense cooperation, bilaterally as well as multilaterally, especially on European matters.
Regardless of their different approaches, the two countries share a series of political, economic and cultural obligations, which lead to an active cooperation also on major international issues, where their positions supplement each other. At any rate, one should not forget the two countries’ different geopolitical priorities which influence their respective foreign policies, respectively in favour of the Baltic-Nordic and the Balkan-Mediterranean areas.
The bilateral contacts have been particularly intense during the latest Italian Presidency of the EU (second semester of 2003).
The Italian Presidency’s firm support of the Danish position in the negotiations at the IGC – especially regarding the transformation of the Danish opt-out on Legal and Internal Affairs as well as the conservation of the other three opt-outs – was strongly appreciated by the Fogh Rasmussen Government; just as the Italian Government appreciated Denmark’s constant support.
Further, the two countries have agreed to support each other’s candidatures for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council, Denmark in 2005-2006 and Italy in 2006-2007.
