THE DIAMOND INDUSTRY
Armenia is known as the country of ‘yelling rocks’. However, it is as well known for the manual ability of its inhabitants. During the Soviet times Armenia used to hosting one of the 7 main industries in diamond processing. Tradition itself, along with the need forced by the closed borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey, induced Yerevan to develop the industry of processing and export of those precious stones which could be traded via air. However, the parabola of diamonds, which alone was able to imprint the country’s trade relations for a long time (i.e. with Belgium and Israel) has been undergoing a declining phase since 2004.
