Embassy of Italy in Kuala Lumpur

Since there is no Italian Institute of Culture in Kuala Lumpur, the cultural promotion is totally left to the Embassy Cultural Office that, from 1997 and with the collaboration of lecturers sent here with extra-academic charges, organizes all the events promoting Italian Culture such as exhibitions, concerts and cinematographic screenings etc.

The cultural activities of the Embassy include different ranges of intervention, in particular:

drawing up and the realization of programs intended to promote Italian language and Culture in Malaysia;
assistance to students, either Malaysian or Italian, interested in studying in both countries;
assistance to whom, in Malaysia, need to learn the Italian language;
organization of cultural initiatives involving the visual, musical, cinematographic or arts field.

As for the planning of events in 2008, the following initiatives have been held:

12th-20th June: Exhibition ‘Italian Treasures: Stradivarius e I tesori della liuteria italiana 1555-2008’ jointly organized by the Embassy of Italy, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) and ‘Virgoletti and Sakamoto’s Company, with the sponsorship of Finmeccanica on the occasion of its 60th Anniversary.This Exhibition provided the opportunity to admire, for the very first time in Malaysia, examples of the Golden Age of Italian craftsmanship (16th – 18th century) as well as contemporary instruments realized in the School of Cremona. Among the instrument exhibited there is a prestigious viola of the XVI Century made by Maestro Gasparo da Salo, a violin of 1731 made by Maestro Antonio Stradivari and a Venetian cello of the XVIII Century made by Maestro Anselmo Bellosio. The exhibition, set up at the prestigious Dewan Philharmonic Petronas, was inaugurated on the 12th of June by the Ambassador of Italy together with the Royal Guests of Honour Yang Amat Mulia Tunku Naquiyuddin Ibni Tuanku Jaafar and Yang Mulia Tunku Nurul Hayati Tunku Dato’ Bahador and the President of the Regional Office of Finmeccanica, and was opened to the public from the 13th to the 20th of June. The string quartet of the MPO performed on the 19th of June as a closing concert.
