Anglo-Italian symposium on cardiovascular disease A challenge for the 21st Century - debating the issues on the assessment and prevention of cardiovascular risk
Date: Wednesday October 5, 2005 - 09:45-16:45
Venue: Italian Cultural Institute – 39, Belgrave Square, London
The event will be hosted by the Scientific Office of the Italian Embassy in London and co-sponsored by GE Healthcare
Overview: In both Italy and the UK, coronary heart disease is the main cause of death. This event is the first of its kind to be held by two European countries. Its purpose is to create a forum for leading cardiologists, public health and industry experts from both the UK and Italy to gather in central London to share best practices on how to tackle the issue of coronary heart disease in their two countries.
For many years Italy has had a comparatively low rate of coronary heart disease - European and WHO league tables - which was thought to be in part due to their Mediterranean diet. However, over the past decade, the pressures of modern working life and the adoption of a more “Western” style diet has resulted in a significant rise in obesity and coronary heart disease in Italy. The Italian Ministry of Health has put measures in place to tackle this increase.
In the UK, the incidence of coronary heart disease remains high, despite successful preventative and education campaigns instigated by the UK Department of Health which have meant that deaths caused by heart disease have been falling since the 1970s and most dramatically over the last 10 years (source: British Heart Foundation).
