The political cooperation between Italy and the United Kingdom develops at bilateral level as well as through their membership of the principal international organizations (United Nations, NATO, OSCE) and of ad hoc fora (G8, Contact Groups).
In the European Union framework, the two countries actively participate to the elaboration of EU policies and to the search for common positions concerning current international issues. Contributing to word stability and peace through the attachment to multilateralism and the upholding of international legality is the inspiring element of both countries’ foreign policies.
Promotion of safety and democracy, support to sustainable economic development, human rights defence, safeguard of the environment and the renewable energy sources are the priority international lines of action of both countries. Both Italy and the United Kingdom deem a solid transatlantic relationship and an active role in Europe complementary and synergetic, and they share the belief that the global challenges of the new century demand an integral and comprehensive answer from the safety actors as well as the collective commitment to support democratic processes.
On this basis, Italy and the United Kingdom share important strategic choices and direct responsibilities, in the framework of international community’s commitment to support the stabilization of certain regional scenarios.
At bilateral level, relations between the two countries are strengthened by frequent contacts at ministerial level. In the framework of the civil society, strong historical, cultural, economic and tourist ties complement and consolidate the broad convergence existing in the development of close political relations.
