Agriculture
Though Zambia is endowed with plenty of water resources and a good climate, only 15% of its arable land is cultivated. Maize is the main crop, however its production is highly dependant from the amount of precipitation during the rainy season. The use of irrigation systems which enable to obtain two different harvests in a single year is slowly increasing. The sugar cane cultivation is important and the sugar production is quite relevant. Other agricultural products are manioc (cassava), cotton, soy beans and other cereals (i.e. grain, millet, sorghum and rice). The cultivation of tobacco is gradually increasing . Zambia also exports fresh vegetables and flowers. Animal rearing is strongly conditioned by the insurgence of animal diseases - foot and mouth disease mostly - which the government tries to fight by vaccination campaigns.
