Agreements:
The signature, in April 2003, of the Bilateral Protocol concerning the Promotion and the Protection of Investments created favourable conditions for a greater economic and commercial cooperation and change the trend by bringing back Italian firms and investors, which were working in Zambia in a large numbers during the 70s and the 80s.
With the Agreement of the Interim debt relief, signed in December 2003, Italy cancelled 100% of the external debt which Zambia had accrued toward Italy during the period January 2001 to March 2003, releasing resources of about € 24 million, which will be given to poverty reduction programmes and to the development of projects in agricultural, health and the educational sector.
A new Agreement for the total cancellation, based on the decisions taken in May 2005 under the Paris Club, will be shortly signed.
