AGRI-ALIMENTARY
Bahrain’s arable surface is less than 3% of the whole territory and agriculture accounts for only 1% of the GDP. The majority of food products is imported but local production still meets part of the national demand, mainly with the production of vegetables and dairy products. The Government supports kettle breeding and poultry farming. A traditionally important resource for the kingdom of Bahrain is fishery. Unfortunately, this activity suffered a major damage during the First Gulf War, during which leaks from Kuwaiti oil plants destroyed remunerative marine species, such as shrimps. The fishing industry is not adequately exploited in spite of the Government’s efforts to privatize and modernize the sector.
