The political relations between Italy and the Philippines have been strongly consolidated over the last few years, particularly thank to visits of the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Hon.Pierferdinando Casini, of the Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs, Hon.Margherita Boniver, and of the Undersecretary for Defense, Hon.Edmondo Berselli.
Within this framework of renewed reciprocal interest, three agreements have been signed: namely in the fields of military cooperation, of migratory policies and of the rehabilitation of the rural areas in Mindanao. Among the current issues, the political priorities for Italy are:
- to consolidate the political dialogue with the Philippines, both bilaterally and through the exercise of the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union;
- to support the development policy implemented by the Philippine Government with a view at reaching the Millenium Development Goals;
- to uphold the efforts brought about by the Philippine Authorities in the fight against international terrorism, even by means of preventive measures such as the Interfaith Dialogue;
- to promote the projects of regional integration as viable instruments for favouring the economic growth and the political stability of the area.
