Although almost 50% of subsistence farming is the one that creates the greatest number of jobs in the agricultural sector (approximately 70% of the Kenya’s labour force) it also contributes the most to exports, guaranteeing 50% of foreign currency revenue.

According to the Central Bank of Kenya data, agriculture in 2005 increased by 6.9% compared to 2004. Such a positive trend was determined by the positive performance of sugar cane (and additional 0.2 million tons), tea (additional 3.9 tons) and horticultural products (including flowers), whose production increased by 12.1%

New markets, such as the United States and Australia determined the increase in vegetable exports.
