Kenya has a well-developed pharmaceutical industry and a production that covers a wide range of products. In 1963 only 4 pharmaceutical industries were operating, while in 1992 the number of medium to large companies increased to 23. Among the companies operating in Kenya and particularly geared towards exports there is the American multinational Sterling Health and the local ones Cosmos and Twiga Chemicals.

Sterling Health, a subsidiary of Sterling Products International, produces more than 40 categories of chemicals. Between 1980 and 1985, it doubled its exports after modernising its production plants. The major products destined for exports are malaria products and detergents.

The Cosmos exports were particularly favoured since 1985, thanks to the Government incentives and the entry into force, in Eastern and Western Africa, of the Preferential Trade Arrangements (PTA).

In addition to pharmaceutical products, Cosmos also produces syringes since 1990. Twiga Chemical Industries Limited that began in 1960 with importation and distribution of health products for veterinary use, subsequently widened its range by producing chemical products, principally for agricultural use.
