Developments
Relations between the two Countries are excellent. Italy is well considered by both the Institutions and by public opinion. The efforts of the Italian Government to promote and sustain the aspirations of many African countries within the international fora are particularly commended. Italy and Kenya have jointly been involved in the peace process between the Government of Khartoum and the rebel party SPLM in South Sudan and in the Somali national reconciliation process. Kenya played a mediating role (appointed by IGAD) in both negotiations while Italy promoted the constitution of the Partners of IGAD (Intergovernmental Authority on Development).
During the Italian Presidency of the European Union (June – December 2003), priority attention was devoted to Kenya.
The Italian presence in Kenya is mainly concentrated in the Coastal region, especially in Malindi, and in the capital city of Nairobi. Many missionaries are spread around the entire territory.
