CULTURAL COOPERATION
The following agreements between Italy and India are in effect or signed:
1) Agreement on Cultural Cooperation. Renewed in July 2004 at New Delhi, this Agreement details the outlines for the cultural cooperation activities.
2) Operational protocol for Cultural Cooperation. Signed in the beginning of 2003, it was valid till 2005 and it contains details of cultural cooperation projects and of the annual allocation of funds for carrying out such projects.
Audiovisual agreement
3) Agreement on co-production of films. The bilateral cooperation in the cinematographic sector was inspired by the rapid growth in the Indian economy (the city of Mumbai, also called “Bollywood”, is famous because of a notable presence of this industry) and because of the undisputed Italian expertise in this sector, which resulted in the signing of a MoU on Co-distribution during the visit by the Indian Cultural Minister to the Venice Exhibition in 2003. The visit by the Minister to Rome in May 2005 on his way to Cannes provided the occasion for signing of the Agreement on Cinematographic Co-production. This agreement specifies the regulatory guidelines for cooperation between the two industries and shall open the way for specific agreements in cinematographic sector.
4) MoU on restoration of frescos in the Ajanta and Ellora caves. Its foundation was laid during the first visit of Minister Urbani in India in January 2003 followed by an ad hoc mission by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities in January 2005. The MoU was signed during the State visit in February 2005 for the restoration of these frescos in the South of India.
EXCHANGE OF VISITS
Hon. Mr. Giuliano Urbani, Minister for Cultural Heritage and Activities, visited India twice. The objective of the first visit in January 2003 was to start discussions for an Agreement on co-production of films and on Cooperation between Televisions (RAI and Doordarshan). The second visit in February 2005, during the State visit, resulted in signing of a MoU on restoration of frescos in the Ajanta and Ellora caves and laid the foundation for further cooperation in cinematographic and television sectors.
