Agri-alimentary
The agricultural sector is fundamental for Cyprus economy and contributes about 3.9% to GDP and employs approximately 22.8 thousand people. Agricultural export reaches about 75 million euros.
Agriculture in Cyprus has two sub-sectors: crop production (48% of agricultural production) and livestock (42%).
In order to be able to cope with the new (for Cyprus) European Union regulations for trade and tariffs, Cyprus agricultural policy aims to restructure the agricultural sector.
Selling of agricultural production is usually carried out through local shops, cooperatives or by the producers themselves. There are organizations for the distribution of specific products (potatoes, wine grapes, milk, carrots, beetroots, olives and cereals) to the market.
