The President of the Italian Senate in Ottawa

31/08/2007 -

At the invitation of the Speaker of Canadian Senate, Noel Kinsella, the President of the Italian Senate, Franco Marini, will be in Ottawa next week to meet with his counterparts here. Mr. Marini will present a public lecture at the University of Ottawa's Desmarais Building Sept. 5. His topic is "Federalism and Democracy". Italy is in fact moving from a centralized system to one in which the provinces (known as regioni) play a more important role. Mr. Marini will meet with Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean when he arrives Sept. 4 and, the following day, with the Speakers of the Senate and of the House of Commons. From Ottawa, the President Marini will move on to Toronto to meet with some Italian Canadians who have donated important sums to the Art Gallery of Ontario to build an addition structure, part of which will be called the ‘Galleria Italia’.
