Italy sits on the UN Security Council starting in January 2007

Starting on January 1st of this year and through 2008, and for the sixth time in the organisation's history, Italy will hold a non-permanent seat on the Security Council, the United Nations body concerned with peacekeeping and international security. The Council is made up of ten non-permanent members who sit alongside the five permanent members who hold voting rights. Entering along with Italy are Belgium, South Africa, Indonesia and Panama, replacing Denmark, Greece, Tanzania, Japan and Argentina. Italy, like South Africa, earned 186 out of 192 possible votes; Belgium collected 180 votes, Panama 164 and Indonesia 158. Italy's credentials in the United Nations include noteworthy commitments in terms of men and means employed in 25 peacekeeping operations being carried out for various purposes around the world under the aegis of the United Nations, along with financial contributions equal to nearly 5% of the UN regular budget (ranking sixth among contributors).

The UN has selected Rome as the world headquarters of the FAO, the United Nations Organisation for Food and Agriculture, and has established offices throughout the country for many other UN structures. As part of a reform project launched by the Secretary General Kofi Annan with a view to cutting costs and rationalising the UN's informational activity in Western Europe, the UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Rome was closed on 20 November 2003. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations are studying alternative solutions in order to maintain a satisfactory flow of information on the UN in Italy. These tasks will be carried out by UN structures already operating in Italy in support of the UN Regional Centre in Brussels, which have overall responsibility for the sector for the whole of Western Europe.
