Ambassador Riccardo Sessa was born at Massa on September 23rd 1947. He graduated from “La Sapienza” University in Rome with a degree in Law and from the Institute of Political Studies at the University of Paris with a specialization in International Relations.
In July 1973 he passed the admission examination to the diplomatic career in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and since then has held many prestigious positions. From 1985 to 1989 he was Head of the Office for Relations with Parliament in the Minister of Foreign Affair’s Cabinet; from 1989 to 1992 he was Head of the Secretariat of the Prime Minister; in 1992 Deputy Head of the Minister of Foreign Affair’s Cabinet; from 1993 to 1994 Deputy Director General for Emigration and then from 1994 to 1997 Diplomatic Adviser to the Minister for Defence. Abroad, after having served at the Permanent Mission of Italy to Nato in Brussels at the beginning of his career, and at the Italian Embassy in Brasilia as Commercial Counsellor, more recently he served as Ambassador in Belgrade from 1997 to 2000 and then from 2000 to 2003 as Ambassador in Teheran. He then returned to the Ministry in Rome to take up the position of Director General for the Mediterranean and Middle East Desk until taking up his position as Ambassador of Italy to the People’s Republic of China accredited also to Mongolia, in December 2006. In January 2006 he was promoted to the rank of Ambassador.
Ambassador Sessa has served as Lieutenant in the Carabinieri Force and has experience as a journalist and as University Assistant in International Law and in History of Treaties and International Relations. He has been decorated Knight Grand Cross of the Italian Republic’s Order of Merit and has received numerous other foreign decorations.
The Ambassador is married to Stefania Butera and has a son, Alessandro, and a daughter, Ludovica.
