The Italian President of the Council of Ministers, Hon. Prof. Romano Prodi made an official visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on April 21-22 2007 to discuss with the Saudi leadership the latest developments in the region, in addition to the bilateral relations at the political, economic and cultural levels. During his visit, President Prodi met with the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah Bin AbdulAziz, the Crown Prince, Vice Minister of the Council of Ministers, Minister of Defense and Aviation and Inspector General HRH Prince Sultan Bin AbdulAziz, the Minister of Interior, HRH Prince Naif Bin AbdulAziz and Minister of Foreign Affairs, HRH Prince Saud Al Faisal as well as other high level officials of the Saudi Government, to celebrate the friendship, the extensive bilateral cooperation and the efforts that both countries are undertaking at various levels, to enhance the excellent bilateral relations. Premier Prodi had the opportunity to deliver a speech at the Saudi Council of Shoura (please click here to read the full versions in Arabic & English) in which he expressed Italy’s deep desire to share with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia the efforts underway for consolidating peace and stability in the region. He expressed Italy’s appreciation and the confidence in the Saudi diplomacy’s deep commitment for the peaceful settlement of the various crises plaguing the region, from Lebanon through the occupied territories to Iraq, without underestimating the need for building up adequate relations with Iran. Premier Prodi also met with the Italian community residing in the Kingdom and the Governor of the Saudi Authority for the Promotion of Investment (SAGIA). Later, he attended a meeting at the headquarters of the Saudi Council of Chambers of Commerce and Industry where he explored with both the Saudi and the Italian business communities the best ways of boosting the excellent bilateral trade.
