The Rising Commercial Exchange between Italy and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

1. According to recent data released in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Saudi imports, as a whole, rose by 32.6% (to 59 bln $US in 2005), then by 9.4% (to 65 bln $US in 2006). The European imports represent 30% of the total imports of the Kingdom. In this regard, Italy plays a more important role, registering faster growth rates, i.e. 21.96% in 2005. This fact is highly significant as it confirms the inversion of the tendency revealed in 2003 and the beginning of 2004, followed by steady reinforcement of Italian-Saudi bilateral relations.

2. The more recent data published by the Italian Department of Statistics further confirm that the commercial relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Italy are growing steadily. In the first 11 months of 2006, it was revealed that there was, in fact, a 30.58% increase in comparison with the same period last year. In the same period the value of Saudi exports to Italy registered a slight increase (3.11%).



3.Based on recent comparative estimates (Italian Department of Statistics, 2005), Italy occupies the 6th place in terms of the value of commercial exchange (imports + exports) with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.



   
4. From the point of view of commercial diffusion, the “Made in Italy” products always remain highly distinguished for their luxurious style, exquisiteness, innovativeness and satisfaction to customers. Relative to other commodities, the Italian goods that were most commonly exported to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the first 11 monthes of 2006 were (according to the Italian Department of Statistics):
