There are a few dominant enterprises in this industrial sector. In the latest years, Latvian Government tried to facilitate the creation of new companies and to improve the activity of already existing companies, especially small and medium size ones (SMEs).
The strength of this Country’s industry lies in the work intensity and in the low - value added sectors (food, wood and textile). EU membership underlined the problem of the renovation of mechanical machinery and electrical equipment.
The manufacturing industry recorded a significant growth in the latest years.
