June 2: Italian National Day
June 2nd of this year, Italy celebrates the 61st anniversary of the founding of its Republic. The 'Festa della Repubblica' commemorates the institutional referendum of 1946 when the Italian population was called to decide what form of government, Monarchy or Republic, to give to the country after the II World War and the fall of Fascism. With 12,717,923 votes for, Italy became a Republic and this date remains one of the most important Italian public holidays in celebration of the nation's birth.

Celebrating Europe!
The signature of the Treaty of Rome on 25 March 1957 created our European family. Fifty years later, we are coming ever closer together. While remaining diverse in culture, language and traditions, our unity is based on common values: freedom, democracy, the rule of law, respect for human rights, and equality. We have a lot to celebrate and such a special anniversary deserves more than a single day. A wide variety of events will be organized all over Europe throughout the whole year. We hope you will enjoy them!

Italy and the United Nations
Starting on January 1st of this year and through 2008, and for the sixth time in the organisation's history, Italy will hold a non-permanent seat on the Security Council, the United Nations body concerned with peacekeeping and international security.
